The Artist's Well
Real conversations with working artists — unscripted, unfiltered, and unlike anything else in the Irish arts.
The Artist's Well is a long-running interview series hosted by Dublin artist Alan Keane, exploring the real lives, careers, studios and creative processes of artists from Ireland and around the world. With over 170 episodes and over 5 years of honest conversations in the archive, it has grown into one of Ireland's most distinctive arts programmes — and a genuinely supportive community for anyone who makes things for a living.
Whether you're an aspiring artist trying to figure out your path, a practising artist looking for connection and perspective, or simply someone who loves the visual arts, The Artist's Well offers something you won't find anywhere else: access to the honest, unguarded truth of what it actually means to be an artist.

What Is The Artist's Well? Every Saturday at 10am, Alan has sat down with an artist — painter, sculptor, illustrator, ceramicist, curator, or printmaker — for an in-depth, informal conversation about their life and work. There are no rehearsed answers here. What you get is a genuine exchange: how they started, what drives them, how they make a living, what's been hard, what's been unexpectedly wonderful.
Most episodes include a virtual studio visit, giving viewers a rare glimpse into how artists actually work — their space, their process, their tools and their thinking. A live Q&A at the end opens the floor to the audience, making every session a two-way conversation rather than a broadcast.
Episodes are recorded live via Zoom on Saturday mornings and archived on the YouTube and Podcast channels — so you can watch or listen at any time, from anywhere in the world.
The series covers all disciplines of the visual arts, including:
Why The Artist's Well? There's no shortage of art tutorials on the internet. What's genuinely rare is honest conversation about the whole experience of being an artist — the career decisions, the self-doubt, the financial reality, the unexpected breakthroughs, and the deep satisfaction of a life spent making.
That's the gap The Artist's Well fills. It's not a masterclass. It's not a highlight reel. It's a frank, thoughtful conversation between one artist and another — with the door left open for anyone who wants to listen in.
Guests have included emerging artists sharing their studios for the first time, Royal Hibernian Academy members, international artists from Belgium, the Netherlands and beyond, and a sitting Lord Mayor of Dublin giving a guided tour of the Mansion House's art collection. There is no payment for taking part and it is free to viewers. Visual Artists Ireland
