Residency in Cill Rialaig, Co. KerryCill Rialaig is a pre-famine village (c.1790) situated in a remote part of West Kerry. Long time abandoned, the village came to the attention of gallery owner, Dr Noelle Campbell-Sharp, when plans were unveiled to demolish it to make way for a ring road along the beautiful, rugged coastline.
In 1991, Noelle campaigned to halt the proposed demolition of the village and raised enough finance to purchase the land and its ruins and convert it to what is now a world-renowned Artists' Retreat comprising 7 restored stone cottages. An Arts Centre and Print making facility were subsequently built nearby. About 4,000 artists from around the globe have been awarded residencies during the past 28 years. |
